Sangou Studio Usage Guidelines (Q&A)

These Guidelines are a reference summary of our Terms of Use, written in plain language.

For the official position, the respective Terms of Use prevail.

About this translation: This document is an English reference translation of the Japanese original. Only the Japanese text is authoritative. If there is any discrepancy between this translation and the Japanese text, the Japanese text prevails.

There are three sets of rules

Even within a single product, different rules apply to Assets (3D models, textures, materials, Unity packages, and the like), Unity Tools (Unity editor extensions that come with the Terms of Use for Unity Tools), and Apps (executable files for Windows).

Modification, in particular, differs. Assets and Unity Tools may be modified; Apps may not.

Asset Unity Tool App
Commercial use Yes Yes Yes
Streaming, video, social media posts Yes Yes Yes
Modification Yes Yes No
Redistribution No No No
Transfer, resale, lending No No No
Number of people who may use one purchase 1 1 1

If your product does not include one of these, you can skip that section.

■ Please note

If you use our products while wearing VR equipment, make sure you have enough space around you.

If you feel unwell, stop using them immediately.

Some Unity Tools rewrite files in your Unity project directly. There is no undo.

Please back up your project before you use them.

Common to all

What you can do

Q. Can I use these commercially?

A. Yes. Monetized streams and videos, advertising, contract production work, events, and use in your company's business are all fine.

However, when you hand over deliverables in contract production work or similar, you may not include the Asset, Unity Tool, or App data itself in what you hand over.

Q. Who owns the rights to the images I capture or the data I create?

A. You do. Sangou Studio claims no rights in what you create. Apps and Unity Tools are simply tools.

Two things are handled separately, however:

  • Any part that contains, as-is, materials or templates that came with the App or Unity Tool
  • The Sangou Studio Assets themselves as they appear in your images or videos

The rights in the Assets that appear remain with Sangou Studio, but you may publish and sell images and videos that contain them.

Q. Three people at my company want to use this. What should we do?

A. Please purchase three copies. For Assets, Unity Tools, and Apps alike, one purchase may be used by one person. If you need different terms, please get in touch.

Q. I use two computers. Can I use it on both?

A. If you are the one using it, there is no limit on the number of devices. You may also use them at the same time. However, you may not let anyone else operate it. This applies to shared computers and to screen-sharing or remote control alike.

Q. May I keep a backup?

A. Please do. This covers copies you keep yourself only; you may not leave a copy with anyone else. Even if we stop distributing a product, your right to use what you already obtained remains. Note, however, that depending on the store, re-downloading may become unavailable.

What you cannot do

Q. May I give a copy to a friend?

A. No. This is the same whether the copy is modified, whether it is a private Discord server, whether you send it to just one person by DM, and whether or not money changes hands. Please send them the link to the distribution page instead.

Q. I no longer need it. May I pass it on to someone?

A. No. The same applies to reselling.

Payment, credit, and support

Q. Should I include a credit?

A. As a rule, it is optional. We are glad when you include one, but it is not required.

However, a credit is required when you sell or distribute a work made with our Assets for a fee (a doujinshi, a photo book, an individually sold illustration, and the like). In that case, please write "三号スタジオ / Sangou Studio". Either one of the two on its own is fine.

For free releases, merchandise, and streaming or broadcast, a credit remains optional.

Q. Do updates cost money?

A. They are free. This does not apply where we release something as a separate product.

There is no auto-update function, so when a new version is released, please download it again from the distribution source.

Q. Can I get a return or a refund?

A. Because these are download sales, we cannot accept returns or refunds for reasons of personal preference or circumstance. Please check the system requirements before purchasing. If a product had a serious defect from the outset and it is not fixed, please contact us.

Q. Do you provide support?

A. We cannot promise a response, but we do read every inquiry.

When something stops working

Q. If a VRChat update or similar breaks it, will you fix it?

A. We cannot promise that. This is the same for Assets, Unity Tools, and Apps.

If we decide not to fix it, we will either stop selling the product or post a notice on the distribution page.

Please note that refunds are not available in this case, because the product worked correctly at the time you purchased it.

Q. I can't download my purchase.

A. First, please check the purchase history or download section of the store where you bought it.

For anything to do with how the store works — logging in, the purchase process, site problems — the store's own help pages or support desk is the reliable route.

For anything to do with the product itself — the downloaded file won't open, the contents are wrong — please contact us.

Other

Q. At what point am I considered to have agreed to the Terms?

A. At the point you download or purchase. Please read them before you start using the product.

Q. Can minors use these products?

A. Please obtain the consent of a guardian before use.

Q. Do the Terms ever change?

A. Yes. When we change them, we post a notice on the page for the relevant Terms at least 14 days before the change takes effect.

Q. I found an unauthorised repost.

A. Letting us know is a help, but it is not an obligation.

Please contact us through the BOOTH message function.

We will not disclose the name of the person who tells us.

Q. What happens if I break the Terms?

A. Your right to use the product ends.

For serious breaches such as redistribution, it may end without prior notice. The same applies to removing a copyright notice, presenting our work as your own, and modifying or analysing an App.

If it ends, please delete the Asset, Unity Tool, or App and all copies of it. We cannot refund what you have paid.

You do not need to delete data you created with a Unity Tool.

About Assets

Using and showing

Q. May I upload an Asset to VRChat and use it there?

A. Yes. Social VR platforms other than VRChat and online games are fine too.

However, this is limited to a form that only you use. You may not put it in a state where other people can use it.

Q. May I post images or videos on social media?

A. Please do. X, YouTube, pixiv — anywhere is fine.

Q. May I use them in a note or blog article?

A. For free articles, feel free; a credit is optional.

For paid articles, please include a credit, since that amounts to selling for a fee.

Q. May I enter images I have captured into a contest or awards program?

A. Entering is up to you. This does not change if you used the App's features to capture the image.

Do take care, however, if the entry rules contain clauses such as "rights in submitted works belong to the organizer" or "the organizer may freely modify and commercialize submissions". The image itself is your work, but the rights in the Assets that appear in it belong to Sangou Studio. You cannot hand that part over to the organizer. If you are unsure, please consult us.

Q. May I use them for R-18 content?

A. Yes. Please apply appropriate zoning so that the content does not reach people who do not wish to see it. The same applies to violent content.

Q. May I use them for political advocacy or religious activities?

A. No.

Modification and compatible data

Q. May I modify Assets?

A. Yes. Change the colors, add parts — go ahead.

However, you may not distribute the modified data.

Q. May I ask someone else to do the modification for me?

A. Yes, but only if both the person asking and the person taking on the work have obtained that Asset from Sangou Studio. You may not hand over the data when only one of you owns it.

Q. May I create data that is compatible with a Sangou Studio Asset and distribute or sell it?

A. If it is newly created data, you may distribute it freely, whether for a fee or free of charge. However, you may not include Sangou Studio's data itself.

Anything made by reusing the mesh or weights of the original data is for your own use only.

Q. May I use the textures or materials on a different model of my own?

A. Yes.

However, if you distribute or sell that model, you may not include Sangou Studio's textures or materials in it.

Creative works

Q. May I draw and sell illustrations or manga based on an Asset?

A. Yes, whether for a fee or free of charge.

When you sell or distribute for a fee, please include a credit.

Q. May I use them in a doujinshi?

A. Yes. When distributing for a fee, please include a credit. For free distribution, it is optional.

Q. May I make merchandise such as acrylic stands?

A. You may, provided it is modified so that it is clearly distinguishable from the original. This is to prevent it from being mistaken for official merchandise.

Q. May I use them in video works or streams?

A. Yes. A credit is optional. However, please include one when selling a paid video work on its own.

What you cannot do

Q. May I set one up as a Public avatar, or let a friend wear it?

A. No. Only you may use it.

Q. May I make a physical device based on an Asset?

A. No. We do not permit the manufacture or distribution of devices, whether for a fee or free of charge.

Q. May I embed an Asset in my own software and distribute it?

A. No.

About Unity Tools

Modification

Q. May I modify a Unity Tool inside my own project?

A. Yes. Please change it freely to suit your workflow. Taking out only part of a script for your own work is fine as well. However, you may not take out icons, images, or other embedded materials.

Q. May I give the modified version to a friend?

A. No. Neither the original nor a modified version may be passed on to anyone else.

Q. May I bundle this tool with an avatar or package I distribute?

A. No. The people who receive it must purchase or obtain it themselves from a Sangou Studio product page (on BOOTH or the like), whether you distribute your work free of charge or for a fee.

Q. May I show the tool on a stream or in a blog post?

A. Please do. You are also free to create and publish introductions or explanations of how to use it.

What you create

Q. May I include files this tool fixed in a product I sell?

A. Yes. The data you create with the tool, and the data the tool rewrites, are yours. However, any part that contains, as-is, materials or templates that came with the tool is treated separately. The rights in that part belong to Sangou Studio.

Q. If I receive a refund, do I have to delete what I created?

A. No. You only delete the tool itself. What you created remains yours to use.

Using it in a team

Q. Two of us work on one project. How many copies do we need?

A. Two. If several people open Unity while the tool is in the project, please purchase one copy per person.

Q. Do free tools also need one copy per person?

A. No. Tools we provide free of charge have no limit on the number of people.

Q. May we keep the tool in a private repository such as GitHub and share it within our team?

A. Yes, provided that everyone with access has purchased or obtained the tool for themselves from a Sangou Studio product page (on BOOTH or the like). A copy passed on from someone else, or one obtained from anywhere other than Sangou Studio, does not count. If even one person without it can reach the repository, that counts as redistribution.

Keeping your data safe

Q. Can I undo the changes?

A. No. You will need to restore from a backup.

Q. How should I back up?

A. Copy the whole project folder, or, if you use version control, commit your changes.

Please confirm once that you can actually restore from it. A backup you cannot restore is not a backup.

Q. The process stopped partway through.

A. Restore from your backup. Running it again will not necessarily fix it.

Q. Can you recover data that was lost?

A. No. We are also unable to respond to enquiries about data recovery.

Q. Can I use it on a project inside OneDrive or Dropbox?

A. We do not recommend it. If syncing runs while files are being rewritten, a partially written state may be saved. Please move the project out of the synced folder first.

Environment

Q. Is it safe to use alongside other assets?

A. We cannot test every combination. The combinations we have checked are listed in the manual.

About Apps

Q. May I modify an App for my own use, or analyze what's inside it?

A. No. That said, rewriting config.json or log files does not count as modification, so please feel free.

Q. May I show an App over Discord screen share, or use it over a remote connection?

A. Showing it is fine. There are no restrictions on streaming or on screen sharing during a call. Connecting to your home computer from elsewhere and operating it yourself is also fine.

What you may not do is let someone else operate it through a remote-control function.

Q. Do your Apps communicate externally or collect personal information?

A. What information an App handles differs by product. It is described in the bundled manual, so please check there.

Q. I get a warning when I try to launch an App.

A. That is because the App is not code-signed. It does not necessarily mean anything is wrong, but please decide for yourself whether to run it.

■ Contact

For questions, including questions before purchase, please contact us through the messaging function of the store you obtained the product from.

That is the most reliable route, since it leaves a record of the exchange and lets us see your order details.
